Sylvia Wehrs grew up in Auburn, Alabama studying the violin and piano. She is a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music where she graduated with both a Bachelor’s in Violin Performance and a Master’s degree in Violin Performance and Suzuki Pedagogy. Ms. Wehrs is a fully registered violin teacher with the Suzuki Association of the Americas, and she currently teaches at Columbus State University’s Schwob School of Music Preparatory Department and the Fine Arts Academy at First Baptist Church Opelika. Previously she taught at the Music Settlement, Laurel School, and through the Cleveland Orchestra’s Crescendo program. An active performer, she has played with the Akron Symphony, Citymusic Cleveland, and the Cleveland Opera Theater orchestra.
Ms. Wehrs enjoys traveling and engaging with students and audiences worldwide. In 2016 she was part of Music Inspire Africa, a program that allowed her to share her love of performing and teaching music with the people of South Africa and Zimbabwe. As a participant of the Global Leaders Program, Ms. Wehrs studied music as a tool for social change, and taught and performed in Chile and Puerto Rico. This summer, Ms. Wehrs traveled to Kolkata, India with Musaid where she coached members of the Kolkata Symphony, soloed with the orchestra, and performed throughout the city. She is looking forward to her next international music trip to Chihuahua, Mexico in January.
